Washing machine humming but not running: identify the stalled stage
A humming washer is not necessarily trying to turn its drum. The sound may occur while it fills, removes water or operates another component. First identify which action is missing: filling, washing, draining or spinning.
If the hum is persistent and the programme makes no progress, stop repeated attempts. A burning smell, smoke, electrical trips or a visibly jammed mechanism means stop using the machine and arrange assessment.

What does “not running” mean on your washer?
| What you observe | Important detail | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Hum at the start; no water enters | Does the display show a supply message? | Water availability and the inlet path. |
| Water enters; washing movement never begins | Is it a normal programmed pause or a persistent stall? | Programme state, interlocks and drive assessment. |
| Water remains; hum during drain | Does any water leave? | Drain-path checks and pump assessment. |
| Drain finishes; high-speed spin never begins | Any imbalance or lock message? | Spin conditions and model-specific diagnosis. |
| Quiet hum but the stage progresses normally | Is the sound documented for that model? | Compare with normal-operation guidance. |
| Hum with burning smell or repeated trips | Do not retry | Safe isolation and professional help. |
Keep the description factual. “It fills, then hums without moving the laundry” gives a technician more information than “the motor is dead”.
When humming needs immediate stopping
Do not leave a stalled humming machine unattended. Stop through its normal controls when safe. Isolate power before a permitted external inspection; do not touch plugs or switches that are wet, hot or damaged.
If there is smoke, a burning smell, sparking or water near electrical connections, keep clear and arrange safe isolation and qualified help. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
Humming before water enters
Check whether the household water supply is available and whether the washer’s normal supply tap is open, provided it is accessible and safe. A recent building water interruption is useful information to report. Do not force a seized tap.
Look for a visibly kinked inlet hose without moving the machine or loosening a pressurised connection. If the supply appears normal but filling fails, the inlet path and controls need assessment.
Do not pour water into the machine to make it start. It may not resolve the cause and can interfere with normal operation. For the full supply checklist, use washing machine not filling or filling slowly.
It fills, then hums without washing
Some programmes include sensing or soak pauses, so compare the sequence with the manual. A sustained hum with no expected movement, repeated failure or a displayed fault should not be treated as an ordinary pause.
Describe the machine type. A front-loader tumbles laundry; an automatic top-loader may wash using an agitator or wash plate while basket behaviour differs. On a twin-tub machine, identify the wash compartment.
After settings and operating conditions are considered, the drive, interlock and related electrical systems may require testing. Use drum not turning during washing for the movement-specific guide. Do not assume that every washer has a belt or the same motor arrangement.
Humming with water left in the drum
Note whether water is leaving at all. A sound during drainage does not prove the pump is successfully moving water, and no visible drain flow does not by itself prove the pump needs replacement.
A kinked or restricted drain route, accessible debris or a pump fault can require different remedies. Inspect only what is visible and safely accessible. Do not disconnect a water-filled hose in an uncontrolled way.
Where the model has a user-serviceable filter, follow the manual’s power isolation, cooling and emergency-draining steps. If safe access is unclear, leave it closed. Read not draining before attempting permitted maintenance.
It drains but does not reach spin
Record whether the washer remains locked, shows a message or repeatedly redistributes the load. High-speed spin depends on more than a motor receiving power; the machine must meet its operating and safety conditions.
If the load is unsuitable, follow the model’s correction procedure only after the machine has stopped and released normally. Do not force a lid or reach into a slowly moving basket.
If expected spin still fails, arrange diagnosis rather than repeatedly selecting maximum speed. The not spinning guide covers this symptom in more detail. Mention if wash movement still works, because that distinction matters.
Quiet operating hum versus a stalled appliance
A quiet sound during a stage that is progressing can be ordinary operation. The concern here is a new or sustained hum accompanied by a missing action, repeated stopping or warning signs.
Do not judge a recording by loudness alone. Phone microphones and room acoustics can alter the sound. Duration, cycle stage and actual progress provide better context.
Samsung’s washer-noise guidance distinguishes normal draining hum from humming associated with unavailable water supply. Use the instructions for your particular model.
Why “replace the capacitor” is not a universal answer
Online advice often jumps from a hum to a capacitor, belt or motor replacement. Washer designs differ, and not every motor uses the same starting arrangement. The first task is to identify the actual sound source and missing function.
Do not open electrical compartments, touch capacitor terminals or test live wiring. Isolation alone is not a general instruction to handle electrical components safely.
A technician should establish whether the relevant component is being commanded correctly, whether movement or flow is restricted and whether electrical tests support replacement. A new part should address a diagnosed fault, not simply a common internet suggestion.
A short, useful check sequence
- Stop immediately for heat, smoke, leakage near electrics or a suspected jam.
- Note the displayed stage and exact error before switching off, if safe.
- Identify whether water entered, drained and whether laundry moved.
- Check only accessible external conditions relevant to that stage.
- Use the model’s instructions for any permitted load or setting correction.
- If the missing action persists, stop retries and arrange assessment.
Do not try multiple resets, extension leads or improvised water filling. A reset may clear a display without correcting a mechanical or electrical problem. Keep a record of what you already tried so the next assessment does not start from guesses.
What repair diagnosis and a quote should explain
The provider should identify the sound source, confirm the failed stage and check the relevant supply, drain, drive or control path. Ask for the finding behind the proposed repair and whether the machine has any secondary damage.
If pump work is confirmed, see drain pump repair. A confirmed motor problem may lead to the motor repair or replacement discussion, but humming alone is not enough to reach that conclusion.
Confirm inspection fees, parts, labour, applicable warranty and any further charges. After repair, the affected function should be verified along with appropriate checks for safe operation.
Laundry or water left inside while waiting
Leave the door or lid closed if it remains locked. Use only the exact model’s safe release and draining procedure, and only if you can follow it without exposure to hot water or electrical hazards.
Do not restart a stalled motor or pump just to retrieve clothes. Tell the repair provider if the drum contains hot water, wet laundry or a stuck object so they can plan access. See door not opening when the opening remains locked after the normal release period.

Contact FixMyWasher with your locality or PIN code and model. Tell us which action is missing and whether the hum happens before filling, during washing, while draining or before spin.
Include any message, unusual smell or remaining water. Share an existing recording if available, but do not run the appliance again to produce one. Confirm service availability and inspection charges before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Does humming mean the motor is working?
No. The sound may come from another component, and a component making a sound is not proof that it is performing its intended function.
Should I push the drum to help it start?
No. Never assist a powered mechanism by hand or bypass its safety controls.
Is a capacitor replacement the usual fix?
That cannot be established from the sound. Designs differ and the fault must be diagnosed before an electrical part is recommended.
Why does it hum but not fill?
Unavailable water supply or a problem in the inlet path are possibilities. Check accessible supply conditions and follow model-specific guidance.
Why does it hum with water still inside?
The drain stage may not be completing. The drain path and pump need consideration; a hum alone cannot distinguish blockage from component failure.
Can I keep restarting it until it runs?
No. Repeated attempts do not resolve an unexplained stall and should stop, particularly with heat, smell or trips.
Is a quiet hum always a fault?
No. Some operating sounds are normal when the programme progresses correctly. Compare the complete behaviour with the manual.
