Washing machine not draining: what to check and when to get repair help

Water left in the drum can come from a restricted drain path, a selected setting or a fault that needs inspection. Start with the visible checks below. A drainage problem does not automatically mean you need a new pump.

First: stop repeating wash cycles, note any error code and keep the door closed while water is trapped inside. If the machine is leaking near electrical connections or smells burnt, leave it off and arrange help.

Is the washer failing to drain, or are the clothes just wet?

Visible standing water in the drum after the programme should have drained is a drainage complaint. Clothes that are wet when the drum is empty may point to a spin problem instead. These symptoms can overlap, so describe what you actually see rather than only saying the machine has stopped.

Use the symptom to choose your next check
What you notice Useful next step
Water remains in the drum Check the selected programme, visible drain hose and any user-accessible pump filter described in the manual.
Water drains, but very slowly Look for a restricted hose or filter. Note whether the household drain also backs up.
Humming during the drain stage Record when it happens. Sound alone cannot distinguish a blockage from a pump fault.
Drum is empty, but clothes are soaking wet Check the spin setting and load balance. Read the washing machine not spinning guide .
Water backs up outside the machine The household waste pipe may need attention. A washer repair may not resolve a plumbing blockage.

A little moisture in a door seal or dispenser is different from a drum full of water. If the symptom appears only sometimes, record the programme, load and stage at which it happens.

Why a washing machine may not drain water

1. A restricted filter or drain hose

A clogged pump filter or kinked outlet hose can slow or stop drainage. Check only the parts your manual identifies as accessible to the owner; the lint filter inside a tub is not necessarily the drain pump filter.

2. A blocked household drain

The washer needs somewhere for its waste water to go. Overflow at the drain connection or slow drainage in nearby fixtures is useful information to share. Avoid disconnecting the outlet and running the machine into an unsecured container.

3. Programme settings or interrupted operation

A rinse-hold setting may deliberately retain water until you select the next action. Check the programme description before assuming a fault. A paused or interrupted cycle also needs to be assessed in context.

4. A pump or another internal fault

If the external checks do not explain the problem, a technician may need to examine the pump, internal drain path, wiring and the system that monitors water level. The correct repair depends on test findings, not just a sound or display message. See what drain pump repair involves .

Safe checks before calling for a repair

  1. Record the display and settings. Take a photo of any code and check whether rinse hold or another water-retaining option is selected. Consult the manual for the appropriate drain programme.
  2. Inspect the visible outlet hose. With the machine off, look for a sharp bend or crushing behind it. Do not pull a heavy washer by its hose or move it alone. Keep the outlet at the height and position specified for your model.
  3. Look at the household drainage point. Note any overflow or backing-up water without dismantling the connection. Tell the technician if the problem started after moving the washer or changing the plumbing.
  4. Check filter access in the manual. If your model has an owner-serviceable pump filter, use its draining and cleaning procedure. Unplug from a dry, safely accessible socket before maintenance and let hot water cool.
  5. Recheck only after correct reassembly. If the manual permits a drain test, keep the hose secured and observe for leaks. Stop if the fault returns; repeated resets are not a repair.
Stop and get help for a burning smell, electric shock, repeated breaker trips, a damaged power cable or water near a socket. Do not touch wet plugs or wiring. Have the supply isolated safely. Never bypass a door lock or open the cabinet to test live components.

If water is leaking rather than remaining inside, use the washing machine leaking water guide to describe where the leak starts.

What to do when water is trapped and the door will not open

Do not force the door handle or tip a full machine. Many washers keep the door locked while water remains. The safe draining method depends on the exact model.

On models with a designated emergency drain tube, follow the manual to release cooled water into shallow containers before opening the filter. Prepare towels and extra containers, and refit the tube cap and filter securely afterwards. Do not assume your washer has this feature or remove a filter with a full drum behind it.

If the filter is stuck, inaccessible or absent, stop. A technician can arrange controlled drainage. If the water has drained but the door remains locked, read the door not opening guide rather than forcing it.

Front load, top load and semi-automatic checks differ

  • Front load: some models have a lower access cover for an emergency tube and pump filter. Follow the model’s instructions before opening either.
  • Top load: do not assume there is a front-access pump filter. A removable tub lint filter serves a different purpose. Use the manual to identify the drain arrangement.
  • Semi-automatic: check the drain selector and outlet routing against the instructions. Some designs use gravity drainage, so an automatic washer’s pump procedure may not apply.

What if a drainage error code appears?

LG uses OE for a water-outlet error on supported models. Samsung’s guidance describes 5C in connection with a clogged pump filter. A code identifies a condition to investigate; it does not prove a failed pump or apply identically to every model.

Record the exact letters and numbers. Check your manual rather than using another brand’s reset procedure. Our LG repair guide and Samsung repair guide provide related context.

What should a technician check before replacing parts?

A useful diagnosis explains where drainage is being restricted or why the drain system is not operating. Ask for the findings before approving a replacement.

  • The outlet route, household drain connection and accessible filter.
  • The internal drain path and pump for obstruction, damage or an operating fault.
  • Relevant wiring, control signals and water-level sensing if the simpler checks do not explain the symptom.
  • Drain performance and leaks after the work is complete.

A blockage may need clearing rather than a new component. If replacement is necessary, the part must suit the model. The pump replacement guide explains questions to ask about compatibility and the proposed work.

What affects the repair cost?

There is no reliable single price for every washer that will not drain. Clearing a filter, correcting hose routing and replacing a pump are different jobs. Access, the model and the confirmed fault affect the quote.

  • Ask whether the visit or diagnosis has a charge, including if you decline the repair.
  • Request separate details for parts, labour and any other applicable charges.
  • Confirm the part source, compatibility and any repair warranty terms in writing.
  • Ask whether a household plumbing issue needs a separate plumber.

If the washer may still have manufacturer warranty cover, check its terms before authorising outside work. For an older machine, consider its overall condition and any other faults alongside the estimate.

How to reduce recurring drainage problems

Empty pockets before washing, keep the visible outlet hose free of crushing and clean an accessible pump filter at the interval in your manual. After cleaning, secure every cap and check for leaks.

If the blockage returns, investigate the cause instead of repeatedly cleaning the same part. For a practical routine, read washing machine maintenance tips . Cleaning advice is separate from repairing a pump or electrical fault.

Need washing machine drainage repair in Bangalore?

If the safe checks have not resolved the problem, contact FixMyWasher to discuss a repair visit. Share your locality or PIN code so we can confirm availability and the visit details.

Include the brand and model, whether it is front load or top load, any error code, whether water remains in the drum and what you have already checked. A photo of the display or visible hose arrangement can help explain the issue; you do not need to dismantle anything.

Questions about a washer that will not drain

Can I start another wash with water still inside?

Do not keep restarting washes to clear a drainage fault. Check whether your programme intentionally retains water, then follow the manual’s drain instructions. Stop if the machine cannot drain or shows a recurring error.

Does a humming sound mean the pump is broken?

No. Describe the sound and when it occurs, but do not buy a pump based on humming alone. A restriction and an operating fault require different checks.

Can a washer fail to spin because it has not drained?

Yes, drainage trouble can prevent proper spinning. If water remains, investigate drainage first. If the drum is empty but laundry is wet, also check spin settings and load balance.

Should I lower the drain hose to empty the washer?

Do not improvise the hose height or disconnect it while running the washer. Outlet positioning is model-specific and incorrect routing can cause other problems. Use the manual’s draining procedure.

What if cleaning the filter does not help?

Stop repeated tests and arrange diagnosis. Tell the technician what you cleaned, whether water flowed and whether the fault returned immediately or later in the cycle.

Can I use drain cleaner or descaler to clear it?

Do not pour household drain cleaner into the washer. Descaling is a separate maintenance task and is not a substitute for diagnosing a blocked drain path or faulty pump. Follow only products and procedures approved in the manual.
