Washing machine shaking or moving during spin: checks and repair help
A little vibration can occur as a washer operates. Heavy banging, movement across the floor or repeated spin interruptions need attention. Start by considering the laundry and installation, then arrange diagnosis if those checks do not explain the behaviour.
A shaking washer does not automatically need new suspension parts. Tell us whether the problem began with one unusual load, after a move or gradually with everyday washing.
Stop the cycle if the washer is moving or striking nearby surfaces
If you can use the controls safely, pause or stop the cycle and let the basket come to rest. Do not hold the cabinet down, sit on the machine or push it back while it spins.
Wait for the door or lid to unlock normally before adjusting laundry. Never reach into a moving basket or underneath a powered washer. Do not run another high-speed test to show how far the machine moves.
If water is escaping, use the water leak guide . If the main complaint is a sound without heavy movement, see washing machine noise troubleshooting .
When does the shaking happen?
Use observations from the cycle that already happened. The pattern helps choose the next check, but it does not prove that a particular component has failed.
| What you notice | Useful starting point |
|---|---|
| Only with one bulky item | Check whether the item is suitable for the machine, its programme and load guidance. |
| Started immediately after installation or moving | Have the installer check support, levelling and transport hardware where applicable. |
| Cabinet rocks when stationary | Check installation against the manual. Do not adjust its feet while it runs. |
| Repeated spin attempts with wet laundry | Check load distribution and whether water drained. Read the not spinning guide . |
| New shaking with ordinary loads | Arrange inspection if loading and installation do not explain it. |
| Moves across the floor or hits cabinets | Stop using it until the cause and any resulting damage have been assessed. |
Note whether the behaviour happens with every load or only at a particular stage. Also report any code, noise or leakage.
Safe checks before booking vibration repair
- Review the laundry. Check the programme’s capacity and garment instructions. Remove unsuitable items only after the machine stops and opens safely.
- Untangle the load. If the manual recommends redistribution, separate bunched clothing and spread it appropriately. Do not add more laundry to an overloaded washer.
- Look at the supporting surface. With the washer off, note visible unevenness, damage or slipping. Do not lift or tilt a heavy machine alone.
- Check for external contact. Look for a cabinet, shelf or nearby item the machine may strike. Keep the clearances specified in its instructions.
- Check recent installation work. Ask the installer to verify transport packing and bolts where applicable, correct foot adjustment and hose connections.
- Stop repeated tests. If the proper owner checks do not resolve it, arrange diagnosis. Any supervised test should follow the manual and stop if heavy movement returns.
Keep hands away from moving parts and never bypass a lid or door safety system. If you cannot reach a check safely, leave it for a technician.
Why an uneven load can interrupt spinning
Bulky wet laundry can gather on one side of the drum. A washer may try to redistribute it or limit spinning when it cannot achieve a suitable balance. Both a single heavy item and an overloaded drum deserve a loading check.
Use the programme and load limit for your exact model. The machine’s headline capacity does not mean every programme accepts that same load. Check whether blankets, mats or other bulky items are permitted before washing them.
If the manual permits a lower spin speed for the fabric, it may be an appropriate setting. It is not a repair for movement that persists with ordinary loads or for a damaged component.
If water remains in the drum, investigate drainage too. Use the not draining guide rather than repeatedly restarting spin.

Check installation before assuming an internal fault
Feet, levelling and the supporting floor
The washer needs the support and foot adjustment specified by its manufacturer. A cabinet that rocks while stationary needs an installation check. Levelling and firm support both matter; a bubble level alone does not show that every foot is properly supported.
Ask the installer to assess the surface, adjust the permitted feet and secure any lock nuts according to the manual. Do not use loose paper, wood scraps or improvised wedges, and do not adjust the machine while it runs.
After a new installation or move
Front load washers commonly use transport bolts to protect the tub during movement. The required hardware and removal procedure vary by model. Ask the installer to verify the correct transport restraints and packing have been removed before use. Do not remove random screws from the rear panel.
Keep transport parts as directed for a future move. If the machine has already been operated with restraints in place and shows a fault, report that history for assessment.

Will a stand, anti-vibration pad or mat solve the problem?
An accessory should not be the first response to unexplained movement. It cannot establish whether the cause is loading, poor installation or an internal fault.
Use only support arrangements compatible with the washer’s installation requirements. If it sits on a pedestal or stand, have that support checked as well as the machine. Do not stack loose pads or raise individual corners with makeshift supports.
Tell the technician about any stand, wheels, pads or recent support change. If a stacked appliance is involved, have its installation checked using the approved arrangement; do not move or dismantle it yourself.
Front load, top load and semi-automatic vibration checks differ
- Front load: report spin-speed movement and any recent installation or transport. See our front load repair guide .
- Top load: report the load pattern and whether the basket visibly sits differently from its normal position. Do not reach inside while it moves. See our top load repair guide .
- Semi-automatic: identify which tub shakes and follow the manual for spin-tub loading, any retaining cover and lid closure. See our semi-automatic repair guide .
Do not apply a front load transport-bolt procedure to every design. Adjustable feet, packing and internal support arrangements vary.

When does vibration need professional diagnosis?
Arrange inspection if severe movement continues after appropriate loading and installation checks, if the behaviour is new with everyday loads or if another fault appears alongside it.
A technician should distinguish the installation and laundry conditions from a mechanical fault before recommending parts.
- Review the reported stage, load and recent changes.
- Check stable support, external contact and relevant transport hardware.
- Inspect the model’s internal support and mechanical systems where the evidence indicates it.
- Check for damage associated with repeated movement, including relevant connections.
- Verify appropriate operation after the work.
Suspension or damping components differ by design. Movement alone does not prove which part is faulty. If a larger assembly replacement is proposed, ask for the findings and read the drum replacement guide for context.
What affects vibration repair cost?
Correcting installation and replacing a confirmed internal component are different jobs. The model, diagnosis, access and work required determine the quote.
- Confirm any visit or inspection charge before attendance.
- Ask whether the charge applies if you decline repair.
- Request separate parts, labour and other applicable charges.
- Check replacement compatibility, source and repair warranty terms.
If manufacturer warranty may apply, check its conditions before outside work. For a recently installed machine, also contact the installer about setup concerns.
How to reduce avoidable shaking
Match laundry to the programme, respect its capacity and avoid unsuitable bulky items. Keep the supporting area stable and follow the installation instructions after a move. Do not ignore recurring movement just because the washer finishes its cycle.
For a wider routine, read washing machine maintenance tips . Maintenance is separate from diagnosing a damaged support system.

Questions about washing machine vibration
Is any vibration during spin normal?
Some movement can occur during normal operation. Heavy banging, striking nearby surfaces or travelling across the floor should be assessed rather than accepted as normal.
Why does a new washing machine shake badly?
Review the installation, including appropriate transport restraints, support and levelling, as well as the load. A new machine should not be assumed faulty or correctly installed without those checks.
Can a small load cause imbalance?
Yes. A small load can gather on one side, while an overloaded load can also cause problems. Follow the programme’s loading instructions rather than simply adding more clothes.
Should I hold the machine in place while it spins?
No. Stop the cycle safely and wait for it to come to rest. Do not brace, push or sit on a moving washer.
Will reducing spin speed fix it permanently?
A suitable lower speed may be appropriate for some loads. It does not establish that a persistent installation or mechanical fault has been repaired.
Does shaking mean the suspension needs replacing?
No. Loading, installation and the model’s mechanical condition need checking. Ask which inspection finding supports any proposed replacement.
