Washing machine leaking water: find the source before choosing a repair

A puddle under the washer does not tell you which part is leaking. Water can travel from a hose, door, detergent drawer or drain connection before reaching the floor. Where the water first appears and when it happens are the most useful clues.

First, stop the cycle if you can do so safely. Keep clear of wet electrical connections. Close the water supply tap only if it is safely accessible, and arrange help for an ongoing leak.

What to do when you find water around the washer

  1. Stop using it. Do not run another wash to see whether a spreading leak happens again.
  2. Avoid wet electrics. Do not touch a wet plug, socket or cable, or stand in water to switch the washer off. Have the supply isolated from a dry, safe location by someone competent.
  3. Limit the water supply safely. If the supply tap is accessible without entering water or moving the machine, close it. Do not force a seized tap.
  4. Protect the area once it is safe. Keep children away from the wet floor and remove standing water only after electrical hazards have been addressed.
  5. Record what you already observed. Note the programme stage and visible source. A photo from a safe position can help; do not recreate the leak for a video.
Get professional help immediately for water near a socket, electric shock, a burning smell, repeated breaker trips or a large uncontrolled leak. Do not remove covers, tilt a full washer or reach underneath it while powered.

Where does the water first appear?

Use the first visible point of leakage rather than the final puddle. If you cannot see the source safely, report “water underneath” and leave tracing it to a technician.

Clues to share when arranging a repair
Visible location What to check or report
Front load door Trapped laundry, visible debris on the seal or an obvious tear. Do not force the door open with water inside.
Detergent drawer Foam, residue, drawer closure and any recent detergent change.
Rear hose or tap A visible damaged hose or leaking connection. Do not dismantle a pressurised connection.
Lower filter access area Whether the filter or emergency drain cap was recently opened.
Household drainage point Overflow or backing-up water when the washer empties.
Underneath, source unclear The stage and amount of leakage. A puddle alone does not confirm a pump, seal or tub fault.

A few drops from the inside of a front load door after opening it are different from water escaping while the door is closed. Report ongoing floor leakage separately from residual moisture.

Does it leak while filling, washing, draining or when switched off?

The timing helps direct inspection, but it does not establish a diagnosis. Use observations from the cycle that leaked; do not restart an unsafe washer to gather them.

  • While filling: mention the inlet connections and drawer area if those are where water first appeared.
  • During washing: report visible door leakage or foam, and the load and detergent used.
  • While draining: mention the outlet connection and whether the household drain overflowed.
  • While switched off: report whether the supply tap was open and whether water continued to appear. Switching off does not necessarily stop a leak from a pressurised supply connection.

Also say whether the leak began after installation, moving the washer or cleaning the filter. These details are useful without assuming the recent event caused a particular part to fail.

Water leaking from a front load door or rubber seal

Once the washer is off, the area is electrically safe and the door can open normally, look for laundry caught at the seal or visible debris on the contact surfaces. Follow the manual’s cleaning instructions without pulling the seal out of position.

A torn or displaced seal, damaged door or persistent leak needs inspection. Do not patch it with glue or apply force to make the door close. Cleaning cannot repair a split rubber seal.

If the door stays locked, read the door not opening guide . If water remains in the drum, use the not draining guide before attempting filter access.

Leaking detergent drawer or excessive foam

Check whether the detergent is suitable for your machine, whether its dosage matches the load guidance and whether the drawer was filled above its marked limit. More detergent is not a reliable way to improve cleaning.

For owner-removable drawers, follow the manual to clean residue and reassemble the drawer and inserts correctly. Do not push tools into internal passages. A leak that continues with the correct detergent and a properly assembled drawer needs diagnosis.

Drawer overflow can have causes beyond detergent quantity, including a restricted flow path or supply pressure unsuitable for the installation. Do not adjust internal valves or modify plumbing to guess at a fix.

See detergent not dispensing for a related symptom and detergent tray repair for the service topic.

Leaks from hoses, taps or the household drain

With the washer off and the area safe, inspect only visible hose sections for splits, crushing or water at a connection. Do not pull the machine by a hose, use tape as a permanent hose repair or overtighten plastic fittings.

If the leak appears at the household waste pipe when the washer drains, plumbing may need attention. A new washer pump will not resolve every blocked household drain.

Outlet routing and securing requirements are model-specific. If the washer was recently moved, ask the installer to check its connections against the manual. Our installation guide covers the service topic.

A tap or household pipe fault may need a plumber; an unsafe socket or supply needs an electrician. Explain where the water is coming from when you enquire.

Leak after cleaning a pump filter or emergency drain tube

If the leak began immediately after maintenance, tell the technician which parts you opened. On supported models, a filter or emergency drain cap that is not correctly refitted can leak.

Use the manual to check reassembly only when the washer is off, unplugged safely and cooled. Do not unscrew a filter while the drum is full or force a stuck cap. If the threads, seal or housing look damaged, leave it for repair.

Not every washer has an owner-accessible pump filter. An internal leak requires inspection; do not assume the pump needs replacing because water collected near the base. See the drain pump repair guide .

What to report for your machine type

If shaking accompanies the leak, mention it separately. The vibration guide helps describe movement, but levelling is not a substitute for finding the leak.

What should a technician check before replacing parts?

The diagnosis should identify the leak source and explain the proposed repair. Ask what inspection finding supports replacing a component.

  • Trace the first point of leakage, not just the final puddle.
  • Inspect relevant hoses, seals, connections and accessible assemblies.
  • Distinguish appliance leakage from tap or household drainage faults.
  • Check internal components only where the evidence directs the investigation.
  • Verify the repaired connections and operation for leakage before handing the machine back.

Cleaning, correcting a connection and replacing a damaged assembly are different repairs. A tub, pump or door-seal replacement should follow inspection, not an assumption from the location of water on the floor.

What affects the leak repair cost?

The source, machine model, required component and access affect the estimate. Ask for the diagnosis and a breakdown before approving work.

  • Confirm any visit or inspection charge and whether it applies if you decline repair.
  • Request parts, labour and other applicable charges separately.
  • Check replacement compatibility and the part source.
  • Get any repair warranty terms and exclusions in writing.

If manufacturer warranty may apply, check its conditions first. Confirm whether any separate plumbing or electrical work is needed.

How to reduce repeat leaks

Use suitable detergent at the recommended dose, keep laundry clear of the door seal and follow the manual’s drawer and filter maintenance instructions. After maintenance, refit caps and removable components correctly. Have damaged hoses or seals assessed instead of patching them.

For a wider routine, read washing machine maintenance tips . A recurring leak needs its cause checked even if wiping up the water seems easy.

Questions about washing machine water leaks

Can I finish the wash if the leak is small?

Stop using the washer until the source is understood. A small visible puddle does not show how much water is reaching hidden areas or electrical connections.

Does water underneath mean the drum is cracked?

No. Water can travel from another location before reaching the floor. The source needs tracing before a tub or drum-related repair is recommended.

Why does it leak even when it is switched off?

Switching off does not isolate the water supply. A supply-side leak or water already retained in the machine may still appear. Close the tap if it is safely accessible and arrange inspection.

Can too much detergent cause a leak?

Excess foam can contribute to leakage on some machines. Check detergent suitability and dosage, but do not assume foam explains a damaged hose, seal or persistent leak.

Can I glue a torn door seal?

Do not use an improvised patch. A damaged seal needs assessment and a compatible repair or replacement so the door can seal correctly.

What should I send before a repair visit?

Send the model, a description of the visible leak location and when it happened. A photo taken safely is useful; do not restart the washer or remove covers to collect evidence.
