Washing machine not starting: no power or a cycle that will not begin?
A completely dark display and a powered-on washer that ignores Start are different problems. First identify which one you have. Power supply, control lock, delayed operation, door closure and water supply are worth checking before assuming the circuit board has failed.
Use the checks that match your symptom and your model’s manual. If there is a burning smell, a damaged plug or water near electrical connections, leave the machine off and get professional help.
What happens when you press Power or Start?
Before changing settings, record the display and the response. A beep, click or warning symbol can help describe the complaint, but none of them alone identifies a failed component.
| What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|
| No lights or display | Check the accessible power connection and whether there is an outage. Do not open the machine or socket. |
| Display lights up, buttons do not respond | Check control lock and the manual’s instructions for operating the controls. |
| Start is accepted, but washing does not begin | Check delayed operation, door or lid closure, the water tap and any displayed message. |
| Door clicks repeatedly or a door message appears | Look for trapped laundry or a visible closure problem without forcing the handle. |
| Machine starts but later stops | Record the stage: filling, washing, draining or spinning. This may need a different troubleshooting guide. |
If a mechanical-timer semi-automatic washer has no display, describe which tub and timer fail to operate. The absence of a digital screen is normal for that design.
If the washing machine will not turn on
Check whether other areas of the home have power and whether the washer’s socket switch is off. From a dry, safely accessible position, confirm that the plug is properly connected. Do not pull a heavy washer out alone to reach a hidden socket.
If the plug, cable or socket is damaged, hot, discoloured or wet, stop. Do not try another appliance in a suspect socket or use an extension lead to work around it. Have an electrician assess the supply and connection.
A dead display does not prove a circuit board fault. A technician must distinguish a supply problem from a fault inside the washer. Tell them if the failure followed a power interruption, a move or visible water leakage.
Manufacturer reference: LG washer no-power guidance . Electrical arrangements vary by country and installation; follow your model instructions and use an electrician for supply faults.
If the display works but the cycle will not start
- Check control lock. Look for a lock symbol or the indication described in your manual. Use the designated unlock buttons for your exact model, rather than trying random combinations.
- Check delayed operation. A delay-start or delay-end selection can change when washing begins. Read the displayed setting and cancel it using the manual if you want to start now.
- Select a programme fully. Confirm that the selector is on a valid programme and use Start/Pause as instructed. Some controls need a press-and-hold action rather than a quick tap.
- Allow the normal startup sequence. Locking and initial checks may occur before visible drum movement. Use the manual’s description to distinguish this from a persistent failure to begin.
- Record a recurring message. If the correct settings do not help, note what happens after Start instead of repeatedly switching between programmes.
On supported LG models, CL indicates control lock. It can remain active after turning the power off and on. The unlock buttons vary with the model, so a generic reset may not address it.

Check door or lid closure without forcing it
With the machine stopped, look for laundry caught between the door and seal, or anything preventing the lid from closing normally. Reposition the laundry only when access is safe, then close the door gently.
A latch that will not engage, a damaged handle or repeated locking attempts needs inspection. Do not slam the door, tape a lid switch down or bypass an interlock. The safety system must work correctly before operation.
If the door is already locked, do not force it. Water or temperature conditions may keep it locked. Read the door not opening guide , and use the not draining guide if water remains inside.
Door and lid arrangements differ between front load, top load and twin-tub machines. Tell the technician your machine type instead of assuming every washer uses the same lock.
Does the machine wait for water after you press Start?
If the machine accepts Start but does not fill, check that the normal supply tap is open and the visible inlet hose is not sharply bent. Note whether the home currently has water. Do not dismantle a pressurised hose or reach behind the machine while it is running.
Report any inlet-related message and whether you hear water entering. A lack of filling can involve the supply or the washer’s inlet system; hearing a sound does not establish which part needs replacing.
Do not pour water into an automatic washer to override a fault. If the visible checks do not help, stop and arrange diagnosis.
Manufacturer reference: Samsung washer not starting or filling guidance . Your model’s manual takes priority.
Should you reset a washer that will not start?
A restart can be an appropriate troubleshooting step when your manufacturer recommends it, but there is no universal button sequence or waiting time for every washing machine. Use the manual for your exact model.
Before any restart, record the error and check for unsafe conditions. Only disconnect power at a dry, accessible connection. Do not reset a machine with a burning smell, a damaged cable, repeated breaker trips or a leak near electrics.
If the symptom returns, a reset has not established a repair. Avoid service menus and calibration sequences copied from another machine. Share the repeat behaviour with the technician.
Explain the problem for your machine type
- Front load: report whether the display responds, the door locks and water enters. See the front load repair guide .
- Top load: report the lid condition and what happens after Start. Do not bypass the lid safety system. See the top load repair guide .
- Semi-automatic: distinguish a wash-tub failure from a spin-tub failure and describe the timer settings. See the semi-automatic repair guide .
If washing begins normally but the final spin does not, continue with the not spinning guide . For a persistent display message, see display and error troubleshooting .
What should a technician check before recommending a board?
The repair should follow a diagnosis, not a guess based on the words “not starting.” Ask for the findings and the proposed work before authorising parts.
- Confirm whether the complaint is no power, unresponsive controls or failure after Start.
- Separate a household supply fault from an appliance fault.
- Check relevant door or lid systems and inlet conditions.
- Inspect internal connections and controls where the symptoms and tests indicate it.
- Verify the appropriate startup and operating functions after the work.
A lit display does not prove the control board is healthy, and a dark display does not prove it has failed. If testing confirms a board problem, our circuit board repair guide explains the repair topic.
For brand-specific context, see our LG , Samsung and Bosch repair guides .
What affects the repair cost?
A settings issue, a door-lock repair and an electronic fault involve different work. The model, diagnosed part and labour required determine the estimate.
- Confirm any visit or diagnosis charge before booking.
- Ask whether that charge applies if you decline the proposed repair.
- Request parts, labour and other applicable charges separately.
- Confirm compatibility and the source of replacement parts.
- Get any repair warranty terms and exclusions in writing.
If manufacturer warranty cover may apply, check its terms before outside repairs. If a household supply fault is suspected, confirm whether a separate electrician is needed.

Questions about a washer that will not start
Why does the washer beep but not begin washing?
A beep alone is not a diagnosis. Check the display, control lock, programme selection, delay setting and door closure. Note whether Start is accepted and whether the machine tries to lock or fill.
Does a blank display mean the circuit board is damaged?
No. The power connection and supply need to be distinguished from internal faults. Do not buy a board before the cause has been checked.
Why is control lock still on after switching the washer off?
Some models retain control lock across power cycles. Use the model’s designated unlock procedure; turning the power off is not necessarily enough.
Can I keep resetting the breaker until the washer starts?
No. Repeated tripping can indicate a fault that needs safe investigation. Leave the washer off and arrange professional assessment.
What if the problem began after a power cut?
Record the timing and any code. Check for an ongoing outage and use only the restart guidance for your model when conditions are safe. The timing alone does not prove surge damage or identify a failed part.
What if the machine starts but stops at draining or spinning?
Describe the stage at which it stops. Use the drainage or spin guide for that symptom rather than treating every interrupted cycle as a starting fault.
