Washing machine drum not turning during wash: what the symptom means

If the washer takes in water but clothes do not move, first confirm that it has reached an active washing stage. Filling, sensing and soaking can include periods without the movement you expect.

Also identify the machine type. A front-loader tumbles clothes in a rotating drum, while many top-loaders use an agitator or wash plate with a different basket movement pattern. A stationary-looking basket alone is not a diagnosis.

Know which part should move

Front load machines

The drum normally tumbles laundry during the relevant wash stages, with stops and changes of direction depending on the programme. Continuous high-speed rotation is a spin-stage behaviour, not the test for normal washing.

Top load machines

Depending on the design, an agitator or impeller provides wash action and the basket may behave differently. Use the model manual to understand the expected movement. Never defeat a lid switch to watch inside.

Semi-automatic machines

The wash and spin compartments have different functions. A working spin tub does not confirm that the wash pulsator or its drive is healthy. Report which compartment and operation is affected.

Record what happens before movement stops

Useful distinctions for diagnosis
ObservationRelevant question
Fills and waits, then washing beginsDoes this match the programme’s normal sequence?
Water barely enters and no wash action beginsIs filling incomplete or an inlet message shown?
Clothes remain still during the expected wash stageWhich machine type, programme and indicators are involved?
Hums or jerks but does not move properlyStop repeated attempts and report the sound and sequence.
Washes normally but fails only at final spinUse the separate not-spinning guide.
Known stiffness, scraping or a jam accompanies itStop use and report a mechanical restriction.

See not spinning for final-spin failure and drum hard to turn for known resistance.

Check programme state before assuming a motor fault

Check the selected programme, pause indicator and any soak or delay option. There is no single waiting time that applies to every model. Compare with the programme description, not another washer’s cycle.

If the display shows a fault or the programme repeatedly fails to progress, record it. Do not keep restarting or adding water to force movement.

On a front-loader, observation through the closed door can help if operation is otherwise safe. Do not reach into any appliance during operation or open a lid to defeat its stop behaviour.

Filling and door confirmation can prevent wash progression

If filling has not completed, the machine may not yet be ready for the expected wash action. Note weak incoming water, a known supply interruption or an inlet error and use the slow filling guide.

The machine may also require a confirmed door or lid state. Record any door-related message and see door not locking. Never bypass that safety device.

These checks help identify the sequence. They do not mean every stationary drum has an inlet or lock fault.

An unsuitable load can complicate the symptom

Check the programme’s load limit and the care labels for bulky items. The maximum capacity printed on the machine may not apply to every programme or fabric.

If the door opens safely with the machine stopped, you can note an obviously tightly packed load. Do not pull hot or trapped laundry out, and do not use repeated overloaded cycles as a test.

Tell the technician if comparable suitable loads used to wash normally. A machine that repeatedly fails with appropriate loads needs assessment rather than continued load adjustments.

What a technician may need to investigate

Once normal pauses, incomplete filling and relevant safety conditions have been considered, the investigation may move to the drive and controls.

Possible areas depend on the design: a belt or coupling where fitted, the motor and drive electronics, speed feedback, wiring or a mechanical obstruction. Not every washer has a belt, motor brushes or the same drive arrangement.

A humming sound alone does not identify a motor or capacitor failure. Do not push-start the drum, reach behind the machine, test a capacitor or remove panels.

See the motor replacement guide when a motor fault is confirmed. A drum replacement should also follow evidence of drum or support damage, not merely a lack of powered movement.

Stop for signs of a jam or electrical fault

Repeated humming without movement, harsh scraping, severe banging or known unusual stiffness are reasons to stop repeated attempts. Continuing to command movement may worsen the problem.

For smoke, a burning smell, sparks, repeated circuit trips or water near electrics, avoid wet switches and plugs and have power isolated safely from a dry location by someone competent.

Never give the drum or wash plate a push while the machine is powered. Keep hands away from moving parts and leave jam investigation to a technician.

If laundry and water remain inside

Do not force a locked door. Follow the exact model’s safe draining procedure, considering retained hot water. Do not open a filter on a full machine without the specified steps.

If normal draining is not available or safe access is unclear, arrange help. Tell the provider whether the washer still contains water and whether the door can open normally.

Related guidance: not draining and door not opening.

Diagnosis and checking the completed repair

Ask the provider to explain which stage failed and the evidence for the proposed work. The assessment should distinguish no wash action from a separate final-spin problem.

  • Confirm model, programme and expected movement.
  • Review errors and prerequisites such as filling and door status.
  • Assess mechanical freedom and relevant drive systems safely.
  • Explain the affected part and repair options.
  • Verify wash action and the other relevant stages after repair.

Confirm inspection charges, parts and labour, any additional work and warranty terms. Check manufacturer warranty conditions before outside repair; different components may have different coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Should the drum turn continuously during washing?

Not necessarily. Normal wash programmes include pauses and different movement patterns. Check the specific programme and machine design.

My top-loader basket is still but the wash plate moves. Is that faulty?

It may be normal for that design. Compare the expected action in the model manual rather than using a front-loader as the reference.

Does humming prove the motor has failed?

No. Several conditions can produce a hum. Stop repeated attempts if movement does not occur and arrange diagnosis.

Can I push the drum to help it start?

No. Never reach in or push-start moving parts while the machine is powered.

The wash works but spin fails. Is this the right guide?

Use the not-spinning guide for final-spin failure. That is a different symptom from absent wash action.

Does every washer have a drive belt?

No. Drive designs vary. The technician should identify the correct arrangement before recommending parts.
