Washing machine clicking noise: when it is normal and when to act
One click as a door locks or a programme changes can be normal on some washers. Repeated clicking with no start, a new click on each drum turn or clicking from a damaged electrical connection needs a different response.
This guide starts with the pattern and what happens next. It helps you distinguish a successful operating sequence from a washer repeatedly trying and failing to complete an action.

Which clicking pattern matches your machine?
| Clicking pattern | What to establish | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| One or a few clicks at start, followed by normal washing | Whether the sound matches the model’s normal sequence | Monitor for a change rather than assume a fault. |
| Repeated clicks near the door; programme does not begin | Door closure, visible obstruction and displayed message | Use the safe door-lock checks. |
| Click at a change between wash and spin | Whether the next stage starts successfully | Compare with the model’s documented transition sounds. |
| Rhythmic click as laundry or drum moves | Whether a loose item or fastener is involved | Stop safely and inspect accessible areas only. |
| Clicks during drain, with water retained | Whether draining is incomplete | Follow the drainage assessment route. |
| Rapid clicking with heat, sparks or burning smell | Electrical warning signs | Stop use and arrange safe isolation. |
Record the pattern you have already heard. Do not repeatedly start the machine or defeat a safety lock to locate the sound.
A click can be normal when the intended action succeeds
Washers can make brief mechanical sounds as locks engage or operating modes change. A sound heard at the same transition since the machine was new, followed by normal progress, is different from a new repeated click and a stalled programme.
Look at the whole sequence: does the door lock normally, does water enter and does the selected programme continue? An error message, repeated restart or unusual movement changes the assessment.
Samsung’s noise guidance describes some start, end and mode-change sounds as normal for applicable machines. This does not make every clicking sound harmless.
Repeated clicking at the door without starting
After safely stopping the washer, check whether clothing is trapped at the opening and whether the door closes normally. Inspect only visible areas. Do not slam the door, lift it forcefully or hold it against the cabinet while trying to start.
A door can appear closed without the machine confirming a safe lock. The catch, alignment, locking mechanism or its related control path may need assessment. A click alone does not tell you which of these is at fault.
Record the exact message or lock symbol. Follow door not locking for the relevant checks. If the handle is damaged or feels detached, use broken door handle instead.
Clicking that follows each turn of the drum
A regular tick during movement may come from a garment fastener, loose object or contact involving a moving part. The rhythm is useful to report, but does not identify a bearing or motor fault by itself.
Once the washer is fully stopped, safely isolated and normally open, look at accessible laundry and the drum opening. Remove only items that are loose and easy to reach. Do not pull embedded wire, insert tools into perforations or peel back fixed components.
If there is rubbing, grinding, altered drum position or damage, stop use and arrange inspection. The grinding-noise guide is more appropriate for a continuous rough scrape than a brief click.
Could something outside the washer be tapping?
A hose, cable or nearby object can transmit a tapping sound when the appliance vibrates. With the machine stopped, look for obvious contact from a safe position. Do not reach behind it during operation or pull it away from connections without suitable help.
Check whether something rests on top of the cabinet or touches its side. Keep required installation clearances rather than packing objects into the gap to silence it.
If the cabinet itself rocks or moves, investigate the installation and vibration symptom. Removing an external tapping object does not explain an unresolved internal click or failed programme.
Clicking or rattling while water drains
Describe whether the sound occurs only during water removal and whether the water level falls normally. A metallic rattle with incomplete drainage deserves a drain-path assessment.
Some models allow customer access to a debris filter; others do not. Use only the manual’s procedure for your washer. Power isolation, cooling and controlled draining must come before opening an applicable filter.
Do not force a stuck cap or reach into the pump mechanism. If a trapped item is removed through permitted maintenance but the noise continues, arrange service. See washing machine not draining and drain pump repair.
Clicking with a blank display or repeated power resets
Report whether the display goes dark, returns to its initial screen or loses the programme when the sound happens. Clicking plus a restart is different from one normal changeover sound.
Do not open the control panel to locate a relay or replace a board based on the sound. Supply, connections, controls and the component being operated can require different professional checks.
If the sound appears to come from a plug, socket or external power accessory, especially with heat, discolouration, sparking or smell, stop use. Avoid touching a suspect connection and arrange qualified electrical assistance. For the programme symptom, use washer keeps restarting.
Why the same click can mean different things across models
Different washers use different locks and drive arrangements. A front-loader’s door sequence should not be used as an exact guide to a top-loader’s lid sequence. Some top-loaders make a brief sound as their operating mode changes.
A twin-tub washer has separate wash and spin controls, so state which compartment is affected. Do not bypass a lid switch or braking mechanism to observe the sound.
Model information is more useful than brand alone. Two machines from the same brand may use different parts and timing. A video of another washer can illustrate a sound but cannot confirm your machine has the same mechanism.
A sensible check sequence before booking
- Stop for electrical warning signs, heavy impacts, leaks or mechanical contact.
- Record when the clicks occur and whether the intended stage succeeds.
- Read the exact display message and the model’s sound or troubleshooting guidance.
- After safe shutdown, check visible door obstruction, loose laundry items and external contact.
- Follow a permitted correction only when there is a clear cause and no warning signs.
- Arrange assessment if clicking repeats with failed operation or remains unexplained.
Do not keep cycling the power, push the door into position or use tape to hold a latch. Those actions can hide a symptom without restoring safe operation.
What information makes a clicking fault easier to assess
Describe the interval in ordinary terms: one click at Start, several attempts near the door, a tick with every movement, or rapid chatter as the display resets. Note whether it happens at wash, drain, spin or release.
Include any recent move, repair, trapped garment or missing pocket item. Existing audio can help, but there is no need to rerun a faulty washer to capture it.
If the sound is intermittent, say what differs between successful and unsuccessful cycles. A technician may need that context to reproduce the fault safely; intermittent does not automatically mean a control board is failing.
Ask for a diagnosis before a lock or board replacement
The provider should verify the failed action, inspect the relevant mechanism and test the related systems as needed. If replacement is advised, ask what evidence identifies that part rather than another point in the sequence.
Confirm the inspection fee, proposed part, labour, other charges and warranty terms. A visible door obstruction, a damaged lock and an electrical control fault have different repair scopes.
After work, the original start or transition sequence should be checked, including appropriate safety operation. If an electronic fault is confirmed, the circuit board repair guide explains questions worth asking. Clicking alone is not confirmation of a board fault.

Frequently asked questions
Is one click when I press Start normal?
It can be part of a normal lock or start sequence on some models. Check whether the programme then progresses correctly and compare with the manual.
Why does it click several times but not start?
The washer may not be completing a required action, such as confirming the lock. Door obstruction, mechanism faults and other causes need different checks.
Does clicking mean the circuit board is bad?
No. Several mechanical and electrical operations can click. A board replacement needs diagnostic evidence.
Can I hold the door shut to get it going?
No. Do not force the door, hold it in a special position or bypass the interlock to run a cycle.
Can a coin make a repeated clicking sound?
A loose object can make noise, but rhythm alone does not identify it. Inspect only accessible areas after safe shutdown.
Should I worry if it clicks but completes the wash?
A familiar documented transition sound may be normal. A new persistent click, mechanical contact or electrical warning sign still needs attention.
Can I record the sound for diagnosis?
An existing recording is useful. Do not run an unsafe machine or bypass a lid lock to create one.
