Washing machine water drains while filling: hose checks and repair help

If water enters the washer but leaves through the drain before washing begins, the machine may struggle to reach its working level. A drain hose installation problem can cause this, but not every fill-and-drain sequence is siphoning.

Note whether filling and draining happen together or in separate stages. That distinction helps an installer or technician choose the right investigation.

Stop repeated filling and draining before investigating

If the washer keeps cycling without progressing, stop it using its normal controls when safe. Do not repeatedly restart it, add water manually or keep it running to record a video.

If water is rising uncontrollably or escaping onto the floor, close the washer’s water supply if safely accessible. Do not touch wet electrical connections; have the electricity isolated safely from a dry location by someone competent.

Do not block the drain to keep water inside. Never clamp, plug or kink the outlet hose, seal a standpipe as a workaround or disconnect a hose while the machine runs.

For a rising water level, use the keeps filling guide. If water is leaking outside the appliance, see the leak troubleshooting guide.

Does water leave during filling or after a pause?

Describe what happened in the last affected cycle. Sounds and display messages are useful clues, but they do not identify a failed part on their own.

Problem started after moving or installing the machine Ask the installer to check hose routing, support and the outlet connection.
Washer fills, pauses, shows a code, then drains Record the code and sequence; this may be a programmed response to a detected condition.

Several fills and drains but the wash finishes normally Check the programme’s expected sequence before assuming a fault.
Water returns to the drum after the cycle Report possible backflow; water returning is different from water escaping during filling.

If little water enters and you have not observed drainage, see the slow filling guide or not filling guide.

What is siphoning in a washing machine?

Siphoning is water continuing to flow through a filled hose because of the hose and outlet arrangement. It can carry water out of the tub without the normal commanded drain action, preventing the washer from retaining its intended level.

Manufacturers identify unsuitable drain hose height, excessive insertion into a standpipe and certain sealed connections as installation concerns on relevant models. The required arrangement depends on the washer and connection type.

A low-looking hose is not enough to diagnose the problem. Compare the complete installation with the exact model instructions, including any factory hose supports.

Drain hose installation: four things to verify

1. The specified outlet height

Ask the installer to compare the drain arrangement with the manual’s permitted height and measurement reference. Do not use one generic centimetre value for all front load, top load and semi-automatic machines.

2. Insertion into the standpipe

Where a standpipe connection is specified, verify the allowed insertion depth and secure the hose using the approved method. Pushing more hose into the pipe is not automatically safer.

3. The correct connection type

A standpipe and an approved sink-waste connection may have different instructions. Do not make a standpipe airtight to stop smells or splashing. If household drainage is the problem, have a plumber assess it.

4. Hose routing and supports

Check for changes made during a move, cleaning or hose replacement. Do not remove factory retainers or add an extension unless the model instructions permit it. The hose should be supported and secured as specified.

See our washing machine installation guide if the problem began after setup or relocation.

Safe observations before arranging service

  1. Find the model number. Use the receipt or a safely accessible label. Do not move a heavy washer to read it.
  2. Record the sequence. Note whether draining starts immediately, after a pause or after an error message.
  3. Review recent work. Mention relocation, a new stand, an extended hose or a plumbing alteration.
  4. Look at accessible hose routing. With the machine stopped, note obvious changes without pulling hoses out or reaching behind unsafe connections.
  5. Compare with the installation diagram. If the arrangement is unclear or needs access behind the machine, ask an installer to check it.

Do not run an unplugged-draining experiment, blow into sensor tubes or remove panels to identify the cause. Any operational test should follow the manufacturer’s procedure under safe conditions.

Automatic and semi-automatic machines need different checks

On an automatic washer, repeated loss of water may interrupt the programmed sequence. The installation requirements and drain system differ between models; use the appropriate front load or top load repair guide for related service information.

On a semi-automatic machine, check the manual’s wash/drain selector instructions. A selector left in a drain position may explain water leaving the wash tub. Do not apply an automatic washer’s hose-height instructions to a gravity-drain design.

If the correct setting does not retain water, leave internal drain mechanism checks to a technician. See the semi-automatic repair guide.

What if the pump is running while water enters?

A humming sound does not prove siphoning or a defective drain pump. A washer may command drainage as part of its programme or in response to a detected condition. The model, timing and display message matter.

If the washer fills, shows an error and then drains, report that order. Do not keep resetting it to prevent the drain response. Use the display error guide to record the message correctly.

If installation checks do not explain persistent draining, a technician may need to assess the drain mechanism, sensing and controls. A pump replacement should follow diagnosis, not the observation that water is leaving.

What should professional diagnosis include?

  • Confirm the model, drain design and reported cycle sequence.
  • Review the hose and household connection against installation instructions.
  • Distinguish water flow caused by the installation from commanded drainage.
  • Assess relevant mechanisms, sensors or controls when the findings require it.
  • Verify that the washer retains water during the appropriate stages and drains correctly afterwards.

Ask the provider to explain whether the work is installation correction, appliance repair or household plumbing. A blocked or overflowing household drain may need a plumber.

If a confirmed pump fault is found, our drain pump repair guide gives related service context.

What affects repair cost?

Repositioning a correctly specified hose, replacing a damaged hose and repairing an internal fault are different jobs. The cause, model, access and required work determine the quote.

  • Confirm the visit or inspection charge before attendance.
  • Ask what applies if you decline the recommended work.
  • Request parts, labour and other charges separately.
  • Check whether plumbing work is included and review any repair warranty terms.

If the washer was recently installed, contact the installer about setup concerns. If manufacturer warranty may apply, check its conditions before outside repairs.

Filling and draining repair help in Bangalore

Contact FixMyWasher if the washer loses water as it fills or repeatedly drains without completing the wash. Share your locality or PIN code so we can confirm availability and visit details.

Include the brand, model, machine type, when drainage begins and any error. Mention recent installation changes and whether water is leaking outside the machine. Send existing photos of safely accessible connections if useful; do not restart an unsafe washer to demonstrate the fault.

Questions about water draining during filling

Does this always mean the drain pump is faulty?

No. Drain installation, the programme sequence and the model’s drain mechanism need checking before recommending a part.

How high should the drain hose be?

Use the exact model’s installation diagram and measurement reference. A universal height can be wrong for your washer or drain design.

Can I tape the drain hose tightly into the standpipe?

Do not create an airtight standpipe connection as a workaround. Use the approved securing method and have any plumbing problem assessed separately.

Why did this start after moving the washer?

The hose position, support or outlet connection may have changed. Have the installation checked before assuming an internal component failed.

Can a semi-automatic washer drain because of its selector?

Check the model’s wash/drain setting instructions. If the correct setting does not retain water, arrange assessment of its drain mechanism.

Should I block the hose until enough water collects?

No. Blocking the outlet interferes with safe drainage. Stop the machine and correct the cause before normal use.
