Washing machine keeps filling with water: stop an overflow and get the cause checked

If the water level keeps rising beyond normal, close the washer’s supply tap if you can reach it safely. Do not rely on the Power button alone to stop incoming water.

Continuous filling, repeated refilling during a programme and water appearing in an idle drum need different investigations. Use the guidance below once the immediate situation is safe.

What to do if the washing machine will not stop filling

  1. Close the washer’s water supply. Shut its supply tap or taps only if they are safely accessible. Do not pull out a running machine or enter standing water to reach them.
  2. Stop operation safely. Use the controls only if they and the surrounding area are dry and safe. Do not assume stopping the programme has isolated the water supply.
  3. Keep away from wet electrics. Do not touch a wet plug, socket or appliance. Have the electricity isolated from a dry location by someone competent.
  4. Leave the door closed. Do not force a locked door or open a front load door while water could spill out.
  5. Keep the machine out of use. Arrange assessment before reconnecting the water supply or restarting to test it.
If you cannot stop the water safely: keep people away and contact building maintenance or a plumber for urgent isolation. Do not force a seized tap or improvise a hose clamp.

If water has reached the floor, see the washing machine leak guide. Smoke, sparks or electric shock require urgent professional attention; do not begin appliance troubleshooting.

Is the water level rising, or is the washer repeatedly topping up?

Describe what already happened. Do not recreate the problem or leave the supply open to collect evidence.

Observations that help identify the right investigation
What you noticed What to tell the technician
Water rose continuously during a wash Report the programme, approximate stage and any overflow message.
Water kept entering after the machine was switched off Report that observation and keep the supply shut until assessed.
Water appeared in the drum between washes Note when you found it and whether nearby plumbing was being used.
Water entered while also draining away Report recent installation or drain hose changes.
Several brief fills but the cycle completed normally Compare with the model’s programme description before treating it as overfilling.
Mostly foam escaped from the drawer Report detergent type and dose as well as any visible water leakage.

If the issue is weak incoming flow rather than rising water, use the slow filling guide. If no water enters, see not filling with water.

Water entering when the washing machine is off

If you have already observed water entering while the washer was off, tell the technician exactly what you saw. A supply-side valve that does not close properly is one possibility that needs checking.

Water found in an idle drum also needs its source identified. Incoming supply water and water returning through the drain require different work. Clear or dirty appearance can be useful to report, but it does not prove the source.

Keep the washer’s supply isolated until the fault is assessed. Do not unplug it as a diagnostic experiment and watch it continue filling. Electrical isolation does not physically shut the household water tap.

Do not leave an unattended washer connected to a supply that is known to keep filling it. A reset cannot demonstrate that the water path closes reliably.

Repeated refilling does not always mean an overflow

A programme may admit water more than once. Check the manual for the selected cycle, rinses and any load-balancing behaviour. A new pattern, failure to progress or an abnormally rising level deserves assessment.

Water drains as the washer fills

If the level does not build because water is leaving, have the drain hose installation checked against the model’s requirements. Do not change the hose height by guesswork, seal a standpipe or disconnect the outlet during operation.

This is particularly useful information after a move or plumbing alteration. See the installation service guide .

Foam and water are different observations

Tell the technician if what escaped was mainly foam. Review the detergent and dose specified for the machine. Do not add more detergent, chemicals or extra rinse cycles while an overflow or leak remains unresolved.

What can cause uncontrolled filling?

Diagnosis should establish whether water admission is failing to stop, whether the machine is receiving incorrect level information, or whether an installation problem is causing repeated filling.

  • Inlet assembly: its ability to admit water and close properly needs checking.
  • Water-level sensing path: relevant sensing components and connections may need assessment.
  • Control or wiring fault: electrical testing may be needed when the evidence indicates it.
  • Drain installation or backflow: the source and direction of water movement need establishing.

These are investigation areas, not a parts shopping list. Do not open the cabinet, blow into a sensor tube, bypass a switch or attempt a live valve test.

If a board replacement is proposed, ask what finding supports it. The circuit board repair guide gives related service context.

Overflow messages: check the exact model

Samsung lists codes such as OC and OE for overflow on relevant models. LG lists FE for overfilling on relevant models. These examples are not universal across brands or product ranges.

Record the full code before changing settings, when safe. An overflow message describes a detected condition; it does not by itself prove that a particular valve or sensor must be replaced.

Read the display error guide and consult the model manual. A code disappearing after a restart is not enough to confirm an uncontrolled filling fault has been repaired.

How should water trapped inside be removed?

Once the supply is safely stopped, follow the model’s specified drainage or recovery instructions only if the appliance is electrically safe. Some manufacturers prescribe a drain procedure for certain errors; do not substitute a generic wash or spin cycle.

If the floor or electrics are wet, or you are unsure whether the washer is safe, leave drainage to a professional. Do not loosen a drain filter on a full or hot machine. Stored water can escape suddenly.

Do not force a locked door to retrieve laundry. Use the door not opening guide. If the machine cannot empty, also report the drainage problem.

What should an overfilling repair assessment include?

A technician should review the reported behaviour before carrying out controlled tests. Explain whether water entered during operation, after switch-off or between washes.

  • Identify the water source and check relevant installation conditions.
  • Assess inlet closure and the model’s level-control system.
  • Investigate electrical components only where the findings require it.
  • Check for associated leakage or water damage.
  • Verify normal filling, stopping and drainage after the agreed repair.

A household tap that will not isolate or a plumbing backflow problem may require a plumber. Ask the provider to explain the scope before approving appliance parts.

What affects repair cost?

The cause, model, access and any resulting damage determine the quote. Installation correction, a confirmed inlet fault and a plumbing repair involve different work.

  • Confirm the visit or inspection charge before attendance.
  • Ask what is payable if you decline the proposed work.
  • Request parts, labour and other applicable charges separately.
  • Check part compatibility, repair warranty terms and any separate plumbing costs.

If manufacturer warranty may apply, check its conditions before outside repairs. Keep the supply isolated while waiting; do not resume use because the quote is pending.

Washing machine keeps filling repair help in Bangalore

Contact FixMyWasher after making the immediate situation safe. Share your locality or PIN code so we can confirm availability and visit details.

Include the brand, model, water-level behaviour, any error and whether the supply has been shut. Mention water entering when off, recent installation changes and any floor leakage. Send an existing photo if useful; do not restart the washer to reproduce an overflow.

Questions about a washing machine that will not stop filling

Will switching the washer off always stop the water?

No. Do not rely on the Power button to isolate the incoming supply. Close the supply tap if safely accessible and get help if you cannot stop the water.

Does water entering when off prove the inlet valve is faulty?

It is an important clue, but the water source and valve condition need assessment. Report the observation without recreating it.

Can repeated filling be normal?

Some programmes admit water in stages. Check the model’s expected behaviour. Continuous rising water, overflow or failure to progress needs attention.

Can I keep turning the tap on and off to finish a wash?

No. Do not use manual tap control to work around an automatic filling fault. Keep the machine out of use until assessed.

Should I open the drain filter to stop an overflow?

No. First stop the incoming supply safely. Opening a filter on a full machine can release water suddenly; use only the model’s safe drainage procedure.

Is it safe after a reset clears the error?

A cleared message does not verify reliable water control. A washer that has filled uncontrollably needs the cause assessed before normal use.
