Washing machine banging during spin: what to check first
If your washing machine is making heavy impacts or moving across the floor, stop the cycle safely. Do not hold it down or keep retrying maximum spin. The cause may involve the load, installation or an internal fault, and those need different remedies.
Start with when the banging began: on the first wash after installation, only with one bulky item, or suddenly after months of normal use. That history is more useful than assuming every impact means the drum is broken.

Stop safely before rearranging anything
Use Pause or Stop if the controls can be reached safely, then stand clear until movement finishes. Do not grab the door, brace the cabinet with your body or reach behind a moving machine.
Wait for the normal door or lid release. A locked opening should not be forced, particularly when water remains. If there is leakage near a socket, cable or switch, avoid touching the wet area and arrange safe electrical isolation.
Use the history to choose the right check
| Pattern | First thing to establish | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Started on first use or after a house move | Whether installation followed the exact manual | That the new machine has a failed drum. |
| Only with one bulky or absorbent item | Whether the item, programme and load are suitable | That more clothes should always be added. |
| Washer rocks even while switched off | Whether its support and feet are stable | That pads alone will fix the installation. |
| Started suddenly with normal everyday loads | Whether support, suspension or another component changed | Which internal part needs replacing. |
| Cabinet stays still but there are impacts inside | Whether moving parts contact the cabinet or each other | That the noise is harmless because the washer stays put. |
| Banging with an unbalance message | Exact code and load conditions | That the sensor itself has failed. |
If the symptom is vibration without impacts, the vibration guide provides a broader starting point.
A load problem can involve size, distribution or item type
Once the appliance has stopped and opened normally, check whether laundry is bundled on one side. Redistribute only when safe, and follow the programme’s load guidance rather than a universal rule to add or remove a fixed number of items.
A single absorbent item can behave differently when wet. An oversized blanket may also exceed the programme’s allowed load even when its dry weight appears acceptable. Check both the clothing care label and the washer manual.
Do not add heavy items simply to force the washer to balance, and do not wash waterproof items unless the instructions permit them. If one permitted load correction does not resolve ordinary imbalance, avoid repeated spin attempts.
Why the washer may keep trying to balance
Some machines slow down, redistribute the laundry or postpone high-speed spin when the load is unsuitable. You may notice time remaining changing or the spin stage taking longer. That behaviour does not justify ignoring heavy impacts.
Record any displayed code exactly, including letters and numbers. The same-looking code can mean different things across brands and models. Use the error-message guide rather than guessing from a single letter.
If the washer never reaches spin but does not bang, use not spinning. If it repeatedly restarts the whole programme, that is a different symptom from load redistribution.
Check installation history before replacing parts
Ask whether all transport materials specified for the model were removed, whether the correct supports were used and whether the appliance was levelled at its final position. There is no universal number of shipping bolts for every washer.
Do not remove unidentified cabinet bolts. If access is restricted, ask the installer to verify the setup rather than pulling or tilting the appliance yourself. A washer that has moved may also have stretched or disturbed its hoses.
LG’s vibration guidance identifies load imbalance, levelling and transport materials as checks for applicable models. Your own installation manual takes priority.
Feet, stands and the surrounding space
The machine needs the support specified by its manufacturer. A floor that flexes, an unstable stand or feet that do not all bear properly can complicate vibration problems. Do not use bricks, folded cardboard or loose makeshift packing as a permanent adjustment.
Observe whether the stopped appliance is touching cabinetry, a wall or nearby objects. Do not pull it out if this risks damaging connections. Keep the manufacturer’s required clearances and have difficult adjustments handled by the installer.
For a stacked dryer, use the approved stacking arrangement. Never wedge a vibrating washer tightly between walls to stop it moving.
When load and installation do not explain the impacts
New banging with ordinary loads after a long period of stable operation deserves inspection. Depending on the design, a technician may need to assess suspension, supports, mounting points, counterweight arrangements or other parts that control movement.
A heavy sound does not identify a specific shock absorber or suspension rod. Different machine designs use different arrangements, and replacing a guessed part may leave the original fault unresolved.
Tell the technician about any visible change in drum position, rubbing or leakage. The loose drum guide explains why movement of the suspended assembly differs from looseness in the rotating drum.
Front-load, top-load and twin-tub differences
Front-load: report whether the entire cabinet moves or the internal assembly seems to strike something. A new change at the door seal is particularly useful to mention.
Automatic top-load: describe the load, the lid-lock state and whether banging occurs only as basket speed increases. Do not defeat the lid lock to observe it.
Twin-tub: identify the spin compartment, load distribution and whether the specified inner cover was used. Follow that model’s loading and braking instructions. Never reach into a spin basket before it has completely stopped.
Can you try another cycle?
If the event was mild, clearly related to an unsuitable load and there are no warning signs, follow the manufacturer’s corrective procedure. Watch from a safe position during any permitted retry and stop if the impacts return.
Do not retry after severe movement, suspected transport restraints, visible damage or an unexplained internal bang. Repeated empty high-speed tests are not a reliable home diagnosis. Nor does a quiet empty spin prove the washer will behave correctly with laundry.
Reducing spin may be a normal programme choice for suitable fabrics. It should not be used to conceal a fault that needs repair.
What to ask during inspection and repair
Ask the provider to distinguish installation or load advice from a mechanical repair, and to show or explain the finding behind any parts recommendation. If damage is found, ask whether surrounding hoses, seals or mounts were also affected.
Confirm inspection fees, parts, labour, any additional charges and the warranty terms before approving work. Avoid choosing a repair solely because a part is commonly discussed online for a similar noise.
After correction, the relevant operation should be checked under appropriate conditions. Ask what load and programme are suitable for verification, and keep any specific care or installation instructions provided.
Habits that reduce avoidable spin problems
- Use the load limit for the selected programme, not only the headline capacity.
- Keep bulky-item choices consistent with both appliance and fabric instructions.
- Report changes after moving the washer or changing its stand.
- Keep surrounding objects from contacting the cabinet.
- Investigate recurring impacts instead of repeatedly dismissing them as imbalance.
For setup help, see washing machine installation service. Routine maintenance supports good operation but does not repair a damaged suspension or support.
Banging and unstable-spin repair help in Bangalore
Share your Bangalore locality, model and whether the machine was recently moved. Tell FixMyWasher what was being washed, whether it banged internally or moved across the floor, and whether any code appeared.
Existing photos of the setup may help. Do not reproduce violent movement for a video. Confirm service availability, inspection charges and access requirements before arranging a visit.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it bang only with towels or a blanket?
Load distribution and programme suitability matter, especially with absorbent or bulky items. Follow the model’s load advice and stop if severe impacts occur.
Should I add more clothes to balance it?
Not automatically. The correct adjustment depends on the current load, item type and manufacturer instructions. Adding weight can make an unsuitable load worse.
Will a rubber mat solve the problem?
A mat does not correct every installation issue or an internal mechanical fault. Use only support arrangements suitable for your washer.
Can I hold the washer still during spin?
No. Stand clear and stop it safely. Holding a moving appliance can cause injury and does not fix the cause.
Does an unbalance code mean a faulty sensor?
No. It can relate to load or operating conditions. Record the exact code and obtain model-specific guidance.
Why did it start after moving house?
Installation, transport materials, floor support or movement-related damage need consideration. Have the setup checked instead of assuming a part failure.
Can I keep using a slower spin?
Do not use slower spin to work around unexplained heavy impacts, damage or leakage. Those need assessment first.
